Homeopathy for Wholeness |
| What is homeopathy? Homeopathy is a complementary or alternative method of medicine which treats the whole individual using a specific remedy. When treating a patient, the practitioner selects a single remedy whose symptom picture most closely matches the patient’s symptoms. Samuel Hahnemann, the German physician who invented homeopathy, described it with a Latin phrase: Similia Similibus Curentur, which translates: "Let likes cure likes." Long-term symptoms and chronic or recurring problems like herpes, reflux, migraines, chronic low energy or chronic stress require in depth history taking to assure that the right remedy is chosen. I listen for what makes that person unique as an individual—for the essence of the person. Then I select the appropriate remedy to address the whole person—physical, mental and emotional. Gentle and effective Whether remedies bring relief gradually or relatively quickly, they are highly effective when selected by someone who is well-trained. I was asked to see a young lady who was quite ill: she was feverish, physically exhausted and hurting everywhere. But it was her unusual facial pain that brought a particular remedy to mind. A few questions later, I selected that remedy, which she took. Twenty minutes later she was on her feet, smiling and talking to her friends. She remained symptom free. Complementing conventional medicine Homeopathy is quite different from conventional medicine. Remedies have nothing in common with conventional medicines—even the way they are chosen and prescribed is different. A homeopathic doctor determines the correct remedy by learning the patient’s symptoms, not by ordering expensive tests. Homeopathic remedies are relatively inexpensive, costing from $7 to $20, including shipping, for a bottle of 75 to 100 pills. They are regulated by the FDA. The extreme safety of homeopathy is what draws so many people and patients to it. It is appropriate for people of all ages, from pregnant women and infants to the elderly. It can help people live healthier lives and live them more fully. Having trained in both conventional and homeopathic medicine, I appreciate the strengths of both and believe they should complement each other.
